  • Green Homeowners Insurance

I always say I am proud to live in San Francisco. It is known for its international communities, multidimensional cuisine, beautiful sights and wonderful people. Maybe it’s the air we breathe or the water we drink that makes us, Californians, not only love, but respect and cherish our Mother Nature. We are known as the leaders in fight for our environment.

Going green is a new way of life. Organic grown vegetables and fruits, “happy California cows”, recycling was just a beginning. Other industries are trying to catch up. We all know about eco-friendly cars, clothes and homes. But have you heard about green insurance? Not yet? Well, read on!

Right now green design is very popular in the residential and commercial world, because everybody wants to live green and often LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings can charge higher rents (sorry, renters).

It is a very new product, which is being sold by a small number of companies. But green insurance is believed to grow and be quite successful, even though it may be more expensive. New homes that are meeting zone and climate specific standards for energy can be covered by Green Homeowners policies. But it is not limited for people, who live in not so “green” houses. Anybody can purchase an endorsement. The unpleasant factor is that insurance will pay only about 10% more than the value of the damaged or destroyed items and the rest of the bill is left for you.

So, what is the deal with this new kind of insurance? Why can’t you use the “regular” homeowner’s policy? Here is what it can do for you:

  • it covers to rebuild damaged or destroyed house, using eco-friendly materials;
  • it pays for replacement of your damaged appliances with the power-efficient ones;
  • it helps you to save money on your utility bills;
  • you get a tax break;
  • it saves you even more with discounts, if your house meets special standards of fire-resistance and safety.

Policies differ from state to state and company to company. Plus, as every home is different, so is insurance for it. Always remember that insurance does not work against you – it works for you. It’s in agent’s best interests to make you happy. Good agent will not leave out some “unpleasant surprises” for you to get later by mail. It’s his job to meet client’s needs and expectations.
