  • Cell phone on the road.

I know, I know! I live in California and our life revolves around phone. I mean, we get to talk to our relatives, who live miles or countries away; discuss vacation getaways with our best friends. We do business over the phone; we solve all kinds of problems in a matter of “dialing a number”. Yes, it’s great that we do not need to deal face to face with customer service, or going to the bank and doing tons of paperwork. Our booming technology allows us to do all that and much more without even moving a finger. Well, maybe just a thumb.

In spite of the law in some states, that allows us to use earphones while driving - don’t! Research shows, that drivers are four times more likely to get into serious accidents while on the phone. This is just a research. But how many times have you seen people changing lanes, making turns (I, personally, almost got hit by a car, when crossing the street on a pedestrian crosswalk, on my green light!), suddenly slowing down on a high speed lane, while being busy discussing something over the cell. And, yes, you may say,”hey, I do both at the same time just fine”. Do not get me wrong, I believe in multitasking. I live by multitasking. In our busy life you have to adjust to keep up with the rush. Yes. But car is not the place for that. Although, we’ve already got so many distractions on the road: need to answer all the questions your 4 year old is asking (non stop!); need to pet a dog; fix smudged mascara or shave before an important meeting; need to tell your sweetheart all about the house your realtor has showed you; have a sip of coffee; get a chewing gum and the list goes on. And instead of concentrating on the road, our speed and some inexperienced driver in the car next to us, we add the phone to the picture. Wow! It’s amazing, how our brain can do all that!

We all (at least, I hope so) have different kinds of insurance: our car insurance, health and life insurance. But think, getting in a car accident because of our attention to other things, like phone, for example, and what if it happens to be with some horrible consequences, like death or serious injuries. How can we go with our life, knowing that somebody is not breathing any more because of us? There’s no insurance for that. We are responsible not just for our lives, but for other lives around us. So, there’s no place for selfishness. We must think about others.

To avoid loosing our loved ones or hurting somebody’s friends and family - take action and be responsible! Please, do not talk on the phone, while driving. Pull over, if it cannot wait. But save your life and lives of other people.

    Be smart, drive safe.
