Do not blame insurance companies!

Have you heard the expression “it’s impossible to know everything” or “you cannot be an expert in everything”? Well, how many industries are out there? How many of them are somehow involved in our lives? How is it possible to know every little detail, quirk and exception in every one of these industries?

I have been in insurance business for a quite some time now. Since it is my work and my passion it is necessary for me to be educated about its laws and interpretations. But I am far from being knowledgeable about stocks and bonds, lets say. And that’s o.k. – because I would expect a broker to give me an advice and, basically, help me to make the right choice.

I was researching something and found out that a lot of insurance agents either expect people shopping for car, home, business or health insurance to be very knowledgeable about their products, discounts and other important information; or just do not really bother with educating their clients. Don’t you think this is wrong? At least here, at SLAVSKY, we believe that people should get the best explanation of what is covered, what is excluded, the difference between higher and lower limits of liability and so on. Isn’t it every agent’s job?

We have worked with a lot of people who were shopping for car insurance after having their auto policies for years without realizing how many gaps there were. Those people were lucky not to get into any accidents; otherwise they would spend so much money out of their own pockets.

Word of mouth is a very powerful tool: it can “kill” somebody’s reputation or bring it to the highest levels of perfection. Having bad experiences with insurance providers during claim time is not a reason to blame insurance companies. The agents who did not give you proper information about your coverage are the cause of the problem. I mean - everybody should do their job (not just DO, but do it well). We expect doctors to give us the right diagnose and prescribe the right medicine; we expect engineers that have designed San Francisco Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge to know how much weight it can support, or if it will withstand an earthquake – it is their job.

It is always a plus to be knowledgeable about certain things, but wouldn’t it be great to rely on a specialist to help us out and answer our questions.
