  • Old age and driving.

My parents live far away from me, so we do not see each other very often. But when we do I can tell that time takes its toll on them. I love them very much, so it’s always a pretty painful topic for me. And it’s a circle of life…anyways, what I want to bring to your attention is old age and driving. Not even age, but ability to drive, because there are bad and good drivers at any age. In fact, according to statistics, older drivers are actually very safe - they do not speed and generally are quite cautious. But around the age of 75 and up the senior citizens group becomes as dangerous as a teenage one. Even their auto insurance rates go up.

But as I said it’s not only old age, but medications and illness are to blame. Be wise and courageous, especially if you have parents or another family member that has conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis and diabetes, because their life and lives of others depend on you. Yes, you! It is very difficult for them to admit that their driving is not what it used to be and they do not want to give up their independence, so it’s up to you to stop them from hurting themselves and people around them.

You have, probably, heard a lot of stories about elderly mistaken their gas pedal for the brake and driving through crowds of people or salons, or schools, hurting and sometimes killing people. You do not want someone you love to be a tonight’s news story (well, at least not the one that involves a crash, police or any kind of trouble), do you? So, pay attention and if you see, for example, your father driving slower, changing lanes without looking, turning from the wrong lane, running red light without realizing it and so on - it is time to put the car keys down! You’ll save him from getting in an accident and having his car insurance go up.

If it’s difficult for you to stop someone you care about from driving, ask the doctor for help: even the most stubborn person will listen to someone “who knows better”!
