  • Who is your agent?

    I’d like to say that buying insurance is a piece of cake. But it’s not entirely true. I mean, yes, it is pretty easy to get quotes or even buy auto insurance on line, but how well do we understand what we really need? We do not know all the exclusions and limitations that could affect our rate and type of coverage, or worse, they could hurt us financially and sometimes very badly.

    So, for those of us, who wants the best, I advise to get insurance from an agent. Having a good agent is like having an advisor. There are some advantages:

  • the most talented agent won’t cost a penny more than the worst one;
  • instead of having “one size fits all” agent will customize a policy to your needs;
  • it is better to buy primary auto insurance and umbrella policy from the same company or through the same agent. He can “fit” them together better to avoid any gaps.

    On the negative side - agents usually get commissions, so you may pay more, than you would shopping for auto insurance on line. But I believe that few more dollars will save you thousands at the end.

    So, who is your candidate? Exclusive, also known as captive or direct writer agents, are those, who represent one insurance company, like Travelers or Allstate. Independent agents or brokers are the ones, who represent more than one company. The only difference between the two is that an independent agent has a variety of companies in his portfolio to choose from. Who is right for you? The one who will get you the best coverage possible for the right price, of course. You are looking for somebody, who can identify coverage gaps, solve problems, help you resolve claim disputes (makes me think, it is like picking out a mate! Must be compatible!).

    Where do you search for these candidates? Here are a few sources:

  • word of mouth - one of the best ways to find a professional of any kind, actually;
  • through the organizations, like Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) - it’s not a simple task, but the names you’ll get from these societies will be really good prospects for your agent search;
  • through insurance company - just getting “a second opinion” on your auto policy may make a difference;
  • ask an agent for references.

    Now that you have nailed your research - the best agent will stand out. And remember - he should have your best interest in mind.
