  • How to survive allergy season
  • For a lot of us spring and summer means tons of fun outdoors with friends and family, but for millions of people it is an unhappy season with sneezing, sniffing, watery eyes, scratchy throat, maybe, even asthma attacks.

    Some have had allergies for years; others are trying to figure out what is going on: do I have cold or is it my new mascara. Some medications, like Zyrtec, Claritin or special eye drops become a part of our life in fight with allergies.

    American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology offers a few survival tips to keep sniffles under control:
    - keep windows (especially in your bedroom) closed;
    - use the air conditioner, but make sure that filters are cleaned and replaced regularly;
    - dust, vacuum and clean floors with damp cloth every day;
    - shampoo your pets regularly and keep them out of the bedroom;
    - wash your hair before bedtime in order to get the pollen out;
    - use glasses rather than contact lenses, which can trap pollen against your eyes;
    - wash your clothes and bedding every week;
    - if you cannot get rid of stuffed animals, kill the dust mites they collect by throwing toys into the dryer for 10-15 minutes at high heat.

    Hopefully these techniques will make life more enjoyable for people with allergies, and prevent others from getting allergies at all.
